C3/DS – One Step Back (or Looking At The Vanilla Norns)

Hah! Once I’d started playing with my new CFF creatures, I realized that it’d been a while and that I didn’t know what the difference between the Vanilla, CFE and CFF breeds were anymore. I decided it might be wise to correct this by looking at the different Astro genes and reading some documentation.

I’ll be keeping the CFF world that I have and we’ll visit our little norns again in the future. For now, I’m going to play around with a population of Vanilla Astros. Playing in the Shee Ark will also give me a more nostalgic experience and I think this particular terrarium is better suited for this sort of experience. The Capilatta is a little too… “test-bedy” for my taste.

After hatching 3 males and 3 females I taught them all their vocabularies through the console, just to make things easier for me. I’d be able to keep track of how they were feeling and they’d be able to communicate their needs with me. Naturally, they used it to talk about who they liked instead. While this “like/dislike loop” problem wasn’t as bad as in the CFE genome, it was still pretty bad.

bandicam 2015-09-28 21-03-10-552Yes, I get it. Everybody like everybody, now shut up about it. Thankfully, I had the good sense to mute creature voices from the get-go. Chatty little bastards, but at least they’re cute. After a while, the chatter about who likes who died down and I was able to just watch them. As babies, they still had a lot of learning and decision making to do and so would pace back and forth and try all sorts of things. They eventually got enough experience to advise each other on how to deal with drives, like resting when tired. Things slowed down for a while.

Then, when they were each a half hour old, EES cropped up.

bandicam 2015-09-28 21-32-55-602You poor, stupid animal. For those of you not in the know, EES or “Eat Elevator Syndrome” is something that happens to many creatures in Creatures 3/Docking Station. The norns just get so bored, or their brains get so mixed up, or the game’s engine has a hiccup that causes their brains to become unable to focus on anything for a while. They default to “eat door” or “eat elevator” when this happens and they eventually starve to death. A quick slap on the butt is all it usually takes to wake them up but this is quite a problem for anyone running an AFK wolfling or feral run, for example. It’s even tedious for people doing what I do, that is, running the game on the side while I do other things. This was one of the biggest problems in the default game but thankfully, there are several fixes for this, including the CFE edits and Brainfarter, the latter which I haven’t tested yet.

The Norns started to do dumber and stranger things. One male grabbed an egg and just stood there saying “get creature egg” when I asked what he was doing. A pair of females played with an elevator and another male kept walking off of high ledges. Nothing high enough to really hurt and there’s no way for them to detect cliff edges, but it was just dumb looking.

I’ll be playing with this world for a few generations to see what I can glean about the vanilla genome. It’ll be fun to play with the newer genomes after a few rounds of this nonsense, I’m sure.

C3/DS – Boy, isn’t that just like me?

Isn’t it just like me to announce that I’m going to do something and then just kinda… accidentally fuck off for a while? Sorry about that everyone! I guess I’m still getting used to blogging again.

At any rate, I’m here now and I’m finally putting together my first Creatures blog post in what feels like ages. I hope you like it. Oh, and remember that this is still a sometimes thing. Don’t expect a regular blogging schedule.

—————-

bandicam 2015-09-25 13-59-00-643It seems like I couldn’t have picked a better time to start blogging about Creatures again. As I collected my agents, breeds and bug fixes for the games, I noticed that evolnemesis had finished the first pack of CFF norns! I’ll be playing around with version 1.1 because the edits there appeal to me, but they come from the same basic genome.

bandicam 2015-09-25 14-36-05-009When it came to picking which of the 6 updated breeds I would start with, I couldn’t make up my mind. In the end, I decided to use them all, two at a time, starting alphabetically. I opted to start with a male so when the egg finally hatched, I got a Male Astro norn, who I named Gabe.

Too lazy to teach him vocabulary myself, I  took him down to the Holistic Learning Machine and waited. It didn’t take him long to press the machine and then start complaining about how hungry for protein he was. I taught him to push toys and to rest when he got tired. Teaching him things was fun, but I wanted to hatch a second creature since having just one can get boring before you realize it.

bandicam 2015-09-25 14-43-21-621Next to hatch was Donna, a Female Chichi norn. You can tell from the photo that I remembered to turn on Creatures Nametags this time.

I taught Donna the same things that I taught Gabe and waited to see what they would do. They talked about their needs and offered (misguided) advice on what to do. For example, when Gabe said he was hungry for protein, Donna suggested he travel left from food. I think she hadn’t learned what she was supposed to do yet and was just trying to help, but I hope she’ll learn soon. I’m counting on these two to be guardians for future generations.

Next time, we’ll talk about plans for these two. See you soon!

Because I Miss Writing About Games…

Hey guys, it’s Kez.

As you likely know, lately I prefer to use videos when I comment or report on my video gaming experiences, but my heart’s been aching to talk about artificial life and artificial intelligence simulation games – the Creatures games in particular. The sim games I like to play tend to be so complex or so slow paced that videos don’t really seem to fit in, so I’ll be reverting to (my preferred format for this kind of content) writing.

For those of you who aren’t familiar, I used to run a blog called Designer Genes for the Creatures community but had a falling out and left after what I thought were some moderation issues in Creatures Caves that I thought were unfair to the community as a whole. With Creaturetopia closed to new accounts, CCaves bascially became the only Creatures-related community I could become a part of.  I’ve been hesitant to return since.

I made some friends though, like KittyTikara who sometimes writes for her blog, Mobula Ray, and has her own Twitch Channel; Jessica who is the creator of Discover Albia, which also has its own YouTube channel; Nutter who doesn’t manage any blogs or sites that I know of that are related to Creatures in any way, but is still fun to chat with on Twitter; and finally there’s my good friend who has her own YouTube Channel under the name PiranhaCupcake (go check out her Fran Bow series). There are a few others that I really admired like Malkin who was especially helpful when I was new, Amaikokonut, Grendel Man, evolnemesis, and Papriko, but I don’t think I ever made a strong, personal connection with each of them despite being on friendly terms when I left.

But, anyway…

The written content will be coming soon. It’s just something that I’ve missed doing since I started to phase Creatures out of my life and I feel like I’m finally ready to start playing the games again. I can’t promise regular updates as I’m still learning how to play the game again, but I do want to play, and perhaps more importantly, I’d like to be able to talk about more games in this style. Oh, and if you’re coming from CCaves or Designer Genes or from another blog, to this post, definitely don’t expect my old PG/PG-13 rule. I’ll definitely be tapping into the language and jokes that I’ve become accustomed to using on the usual show… As you’ve probably noticed in my previous posts.  It’s just part of who I am and I don’t feel it’s necessary to censor my language in this space.

Anyway, thanks a bundle for taking the time to read all this! This is only the beginning of an exciting chapter of my life and I’m glad to have you all with me. Let’s play some games together!
