When I checked on the old Norn, Aidan was being bullied by Grub, who kept saying “Grub angry”. I don’t even know why! Still, a few slaps from an angry Grendel seemed to get Aidan awfully interested in food for some reason so he ate a carrot and managed to flee just in time.

Speaking of eating carrots, I caught half-brothers Danny and David eating Darkling Cave carrots on their own in the low level of the temple. My mostly hands-off method of raising seemed to be paying off. I certainly wasn’t used to norns who learned how to fend for themselves.

Granted, Opal was a fantastic example of an independent norn and Danny was one of her sons. Perhaps good genetics lent a hand.

Cassy decided it was time to have another baby and started hassling Danny in his sleep. When he awoke, she chased after him, flashing me the biggest smile!

Perhaps to her dismay, Danny didn’t give in and she wasn’t pregnant again. Good news for me, I had enough eggs and babies to deal with already! I need the break.

I do joke, of course. Age was starting to catch up to not only Aidan, but to his son Bobby, too. Having the same face meant they had the same tired expression on their faces. My heart ached knowing that I would have to say good bye to each of them pretty soon.

Danny caused my heart to skip a beat when he ate a weed and “Sick” appeared on the Observation Kit. Thankfully, it was just a relatively harmless BaoBab and only a nibble.

When I haven’t played a Creatures game in a while, I like to pop in the first in the series. I don’t know why. Creatures 1 isn’t the game I started with, and it’s the one I’m the least familiar with, but I do enjoy it quite a bit.

It could be that the warm, colors and 90s atmosphere feels more familiar than it actually is. Whatever the case, this is a great game to come back to.

Cassy’s pregnancy was still underway when I opened the game but otherwise, there were no real pressing matters.

Aidan and Cassy were the only ones with their health below 70 and I think poor Aidan was just too tired to eat. It didn’t help things when David and Cassy went to investigate the old man.

With Lydia gone, Aidan was now the oldest Norn in the world and it looked like his time was coming soon. At an impressive 11 hours, 50 minutes, he certainly seemed like he would be old enough for Silicon Heaven. The second oldest, Bobby, seemed much further away at only 8 hours, 50 minutes old. The age groups were pretty spread apart, with a 12 hour old norn, a 9 hour old norn, two 3 hour old norns, one 1 hour old norn and a baby!

This spelled good news for Cassy, though. Being the only female and one of the 3 hour old norns meant she had the potential to have eggs with every one of the males. Good for her, but I will be introducing another female once Aidan passes away.

Considering this, I remembered that I had some previously hatched eggs that I would have to deal with. I’d also stopped checking creatures’ genetics because I found it was starting to get tedious and was robbing me a little of my enjoyment of the game.

So, what to do? I could release spare creatures as downloads or I could try to hatch and raise every single one. Until I decide, though, I’m also saving the genetics files for all these creatures just in case I need them for anything. Who knows, I might come up with something interesting.

The game rolled-back and, as it turns out, Opal was going to die anyway. I’m a little bummed out that she can’t join us in the fresh world, but here we go anyway.

Things were a little bit of a mess getting started. There was a lot of slapping, a lot of kissing and a lot of chaos. Amidst the chaos however, Lydia managed to become pregnant.

While I waited for Lydia to lay her egg, I glimpsed Grub below, taking a nap on his way from the hooch still.

After Lydia laid her egg, I decided to add just a few food sources and leave it at that. No more refrigerator, no learning aids till eggs started hatching, nothing. I added Muppetboy’s carrots and watched the world play out.

David and Cassy were in the house together and, not long after David had his nap, I decided that the pair should try for an egg. Lydia was already over 12 hours old and was coming to the end of her life soon, so another egg couldn’t hurt. In fact, as I fed Aidan, Lydia passed away riding on the automatic wagon beneath the ocean. It was more than a little saddening to see her go, but she led a happy life.

The next baby I introduced was a son of hers, though. This is Perry, son of Lydia and Gavin. What a broad smile! It’s always a treat when a baby has such a big smile on its face right on import, er hatching.

As he learned his words with them, David and Cassy decided to have an egg. Maybe if we’re lucky, her egg got some education while it was in her belly, huh?

I did realize something, though. With Perry in the world, the sex ratio was wildly out of whack. Cassy was our only girl! She had to share Albia with Adian, David, Bobby, Danny and Perry! I’m sure she wouldn’t mind, but I’m still a little dumbfounded. Oh well. I guess I could look at this as a way to slow down egg production a little bit. With one egg in the world and 9 babies on hold waiting to be imported, I still had quite a few young ones to welcome.

Eventually, it had to happen. Someone other than Lydia had to get sick. This time, it’s poor Bobby. Luckily, his illness seems to be less serious than nearly all of Lydia’s. Before he even had to eat, the illness worked its way out of his system. That said, it didn’t stop him from playing that fun “run away from what you’re holding in your hand” game that norns like to play sometimes.

I collected Cassy’s egg and before Bobby was back in good health, Opal decided to have another egg. These ladies have always moved quickly, I have to say. To save time, I opted for a CSection which, tragically, seems to have killed poor Opal! Oh no!

This makes me very sad. I hadn’t expected this to go so poorly. I really only wanted to save time so that I could do the soft reset before any more norns got pregnant or sick. I’m sorry, Opal. I wish I’d known this could kill you.

Still, I had to start the world fresh so I couldn’t linger and grieve. After hatching the eggs and exporting the babies, I had 10 unnamed babies to introduce in the future. That’s a very large number. I would have to decide what to do with the little darlings but posting them for download wasn’t attractive.

That’s something to wonder for later, I suppose. For now, Opal’s death has got me down.
