bandicam 2014-12-04 22-44-43-672 copyBoba tea anyone? Well, none for me but her name reminded me of the drink.

Anyway, this is Boba. She is another one of mea’s Zombie creatures. Like Bihia, she is missing roughly half of her genes, including the genes that would normally make her age to the next stages.

In fact, my best guess as to why she’s alive at all is because the gene that would normally cause a norn to die if they have low energy is also absent in her. This might also be true for Bihia.

Unlike Bihia, however, Boba can’t seem to walk properly and walks in a tight circle back and forth. Also unlike Bihia, Boba seems more interested in pacing and looking around than Bihia. I added a dispenser to see if Boba would be as dispenser happy as Bihia but, sadly, she doesn’t seem like she has the same potential to be a good vending machine bot as Bihia.

I guess tampering is a good word for what I felt like doing today. See, the thing about learning CAOS (from my experience) is that you can’t learn everything about the way the game works from reading the documentation. That’ll teach you how the various codes work, yes and that’s perhaps one of the most important parts of learning how to develop for the games. However, if you’re trying to modify the game, it’s important to learn how the systems in place work.

A good place to start is to check out !DS_game variables.cos. I’ve opened it in Notepad.

bandicam 2014-12-03 09-45-27-075 copyThe last time I opened up this document was to play around with an edited Creature Breeding script I was playing with but since my game got corrupted and I had to reinstall, I had a brand new !DS_game variables.cos file to play around with.

Opening up the file and taking a look at the different variables did get me thinking about some things I could be making or doing with the game to make it more interesting. For example, if you look at the “Twinning” variables, you can edit them to make twins, triplets, etc. more common. You could also edit the way creatures behave. Since creatures are just agents, you could adjust them so that they aren’t interactive at all. You could even adjust bhvr so that creatures can’t hit each other. I’m not sure of the consequences of this but it’s something worth experimenting with in the future.

bandicam 2014-11-28 15-46-02-534 copyIf asked to go on a vacation with Jane, I would wholeheartedly decline. The Jungle isn’t my idea of an ideal vacay spot, but Jane certainly seems to enjoy it. I will admit that the magic beans make this place more interesting but still. Not my thing.

I had other sights to see with the rest of the norns, though. Once they decided that pushing portals was fun, they were all over the ship. Geoffrey and Percy made their way to the desert, Susan went to the jungle, William to the Norn Meso they were still traveling for a while. Henrietta and Paulie both stuck to the Norn Terrarium and napped near the heater.

bandicam 2014-11-29 14-27-21-562 copyBefore long, everyone was out and about doing their own thing. I even tried to get Susan pregnant when she was alone with Percy but, no such luck, I’m not currently expecting any new eggs from this group. Jane was still near the two of them so I encouraged her to use the elevator to visit them. Despite a kisspop, no pregnancy notifications.

After a while, I decided to visit everyone and offer a shower of hand food. I installed a few more heaters and, when I wasn’t looking, Jane and Percy made another egg together. I was feeling very pessimistic that Susan would ever try for one. At least she got along alright with Henrietta.

bandicam 2014-11-29 14-49-57-650 copySpeaking of, Henrietta became pregnant and had an egg when my attention was diverted. Good for you! Everyone, meet Oodle. He’s the newest of our grendels.

I wasn’t planning on a second population in this game, but it was welcome nonetheless. I fed everyone and made a note to pay closer attention next time.

bandicam 2014-11-28 15-30-26-585 copyI hate to admit it, but things were starting to slow down and I wanted to see more than just Norns in this world. I didn’t have any intent to breed grendels or ettins but the diversity is nice. That said, I went ahead and hatched a male ettin named “Ett”. I led him into the Norn Terrarium with the other creatures and he seemed to fit right in already.

Not moments after his introduction, Jane was pregnant again. William would be the father of this egg. Then, just before Jane laid her egg, Ett was killed. It seemed Percy and William didn’t like Ett much and I hardly had time to rescue the poor guy because I was preoccupied with Jane.

Jane was happy to restore the population a bit, though since she became pregnant again! It seemed like she would be the most important norn of the run since Susan didn’t seem to have any interest at all in breeding.

This didn’t do much to cheer me up so instead, I introduced a pair of Friendly Banshee Grendels to the bunch. I named the male Paulie and the female Henrietta. Susan didn’t seem too keen on either of them but they were better able to care for themselves, at least. I watched them more closely than Ett and punished Percy and Susan when they started terrorizing poor Paulie. Henrietta at least seemed to be faring much better. She only had William and Geoffrey to bother her and they weren’t especially active. Oh, but where was Jane?
